Dear The Coalition. We dont want more weapon skins, we already have too many!

weapon skin

TLDR: This started as a little moan about Weapon skins, then turned into a bit of a rant about the direction of past Gears games and now with an over exaggerated focus on customization.

I believe that less is more, and having too many weapons, too many weapon skins, too many character skins actually takes away from the gameplay.

No longer are we excited about “new content” for the game, because they are just making new patterns and not a whole lot else.

The game Rocket League has a great user interface, really great and consistent matchmaking, great ranking system and a replay editor to die for. Rocket league is not on the same budget, does not have the same engine etc.. but being Microsofts AAA title, dont we deserve something that is at least on par with a game like this??

It seems to me that we are taken for fools with the season pass, and the lazy content being produced is something they are even getting us to do with a competition to make YET ANOTHER WEAPON SKIN.

Full Opinion Post Starts Here..

So Christmas is done with, although we can still collect all of the Christmas weapon skins.

They only cost 400 Credits a go so thats only about 3 or 4 matches of King of the Hill (or about an hour or more of your life) to earn those credits to be able to collect all of those weapon skins for Christmas. Just gotta hope we dont get duplicates, shame we cant trade like some games allow.

Oh and dont forget about the UIR weapon skins. These ones are fantastically ordinary looking, which is great if you like the hundred other weapon skin options that are fairly ordinary and unnecessary. These UIR ones will only cost you over 4,000 credits… and dont even get me started on the absolute bargain that is the eSports skins, or the Black Steel set. Those are fantastic too. They only cost real money, but thats acceptable to us. £8.00 for some artwork on a gun that i use in a game that I enjoy playing. What more could I want!!

It seems that the first Gears of War games in the series were somewhat challenged in their ability to satisfy gamers needs for customisation. And the importance of it shown in the forums to people was highlighted often, and people really wanted there to be more options going forward. Fair enough!

So in Gears of War 1, we had very limited character sets, and weapon skins? You were lucky to even have a hammerburst selection in Gears of War 2…. but you know what. That was actually better in my view. Having less choice is sometimes a good thing. Like “OMG That guy has the Gold Hammerburst!! WTF!!!” Gone are those days, because everyone has a different weapon skin and noone really knows what ones are more rare than other ones. Except if we see someone rocking out a Black Steel something, then we can quite clearly accept that these people have too much money than sense in some cases.

This whole concept of less choice is better, couldnt be more true than in Gears of War 3 with the introduction of the Retro Lancer and the Sawed-off shotgun. These two weapons were two highlighted weapons that were turning players off a lot in Gears of War 3, especially with the Veteran players and biggest fans of the game. It was like “oh we see how you like playing the game, so we are going to make it awkward for the way you like playing it” It would be like someone in soccer saying “well actually we see the goalkeepers like using their hands and its really effective so we are actually going to not allow it anymore”

Then along comes Gears of War Judgment, which promised us all what we had ever dreamed of and more, all these events promoting the game, whole new game modes and concepts of playing such as Outrun.

At a time when Call of Duty was the biggest game of our generation it seemed like a wise move by Epic games to copy the formula to some degree, and create a Call of Duty clone disguised in the game we all know and love. Forget tactical battles and the slow taking of cover, creating angles to dominate areas of the map.. its all about the rush, just keep running and rushing if you want to play this game. See a 90 degree corner there? Yup there is another coming up in about 3 seconds and you have no idea whats coming in any direction because of the closed off maps and the lack of significant cover means its pretty much a Gnasher battle every 3 seconds. But yay we love Gears of War and you know what else we love? 100 playlists, and seperate playlists for people with the DLC and people without it. So if you ever want to get clips and show off videos on YouTube just delete some DLC and play with people who have no idea, get famous on YT and have lots of fun that way.

Over the 10 years of Gears, I must admit that Gears of War 4 is pretty much what Gears of War should be and has been. It is a modern upgraded graphical game, with a more moden feel to it. However, the real problem we have now is to do with priorities and treating the fans as fools.

Give us a replay editor, stop giving us skins, give us a ranking system that works, stop treating us like fools.

All Gears of War 4 Emblems List

Gears of War 4 Emblems
Gears of War 4 Emblems

The emblems in Gears of War 4 is a new concept that shows your chosen emblem (essentially a graphic) that goes on your name and is associated to your gamertag and identity online in Gears of War 4.

The emblems dont hold much actual use but they are useful to show that you are from a specific country, which can be handy to preview. Id love to see where everyeone is from as their emblem and forget about all the others personally!

Another use, is if you are part of a group or a clan or a team, you can all use the same emblem. This adds extra identity to you and who is in your team and plays together. Also if you are all rocking the same design it looks pretty intimidating to the opposition!

All Character Skins in Gears of War 4

gears of war 4 character skins

We have spent some time creating a comprehensive list of all the Character skins that are unlockable or usable in Gears of War 4. We aim to make this list as comprehensive as possible, if you feel we have missed one then please tweet us @GoWPortal

There are 84 different Character Skins playable in Gears of War 4. And likely plenty more to come in future updates.

Quite a difference between Gears of War 4 and previous Gears of War games which over the years have had more and more customised character skins available. In Gears of War 1, only a handful of characters existed. Gears 2 was somewhat similar. But When Gears of War 3 came around, along with Judgment we saw a lot more skins being created for all the different characters.

How many skins could we all want? With so much variety its hard to know which ones are the most rare, but this list can be used as a guide to show which ones might be considered rare.

GoWPortal Team Meetup with the Community at GFinity Gears of War Pro Circuit

My first LAN Gears eSports event was awesome, and that’s not me just saying it!

We had a long awaited big meetup between GoWPortal folks, Jay a.k.a ProGear360, and Barnes a.k.a @BeardedGamerYoh, and Call Me CEO, Ben who I owe big thanks to for keeping me motivated in the community, its been 2 years or so since we first starting talking and it has taken that long to finally meet up. Im sure the next meet up wont be so long!

Call Me eSports
Call Me eSports Gang

And of course a key highlight as well was meeting up with MadDogMalcs, the guy behind @Play4Pawz one of the best charity events of the calander year, riasing loads of money for animal shelters in the USA and the UK.

Ess RaWr, Skillzy and SAS Sh4dowz were there too making noise.

And as Jack said about Ess RaWr, “I’ve never seen someone take so many selfies.” He literally had them with everyone, including me.

We had gears community members from the Netherlands with Grexoz making an appearance and Tascha @MemeFatale and friend from Germany!

Amazing those guys could come over from overseas to meet up in London together😀 What a commitment!!

Although personally only going for a morning and afternoon shift I didnt make the most of what it could have been by going for the full weekend. It was absolutely worth the effort even for just a day.

We enjoyed watching the top quality gameplay from THE BEST players and teams in the game, and watching how new teams were causing a few upsets too. The quality from the teams is impressive even after only a few months into the new competitive mode Escalation and Gears 4 itself, it really is an action packed game mode with kills happening all the while and teams domination being more tactical yet more chaotic. A good mix that creates tons of action.

I can’t help however feel that the game would be better to be viewed from an overhead view sometimes for a spectator, as for any new player to the game, it’s really hard to know what’s happening at many locations at once. There are 3 capture zones but only one view of one player out of a possible 8 available at any moment. You soon see kills coming constantly, it doesnt really stop. But unless you know the levels as a player yourself you dont get a good idea as to what is happening from the bigger picture of things.

When watching the overhead view, it feels a bit like seeing the full pitch view of a football/soccer match, rather than watching each individual player in sequence.

I would highly recommend a view that satisfies a more “full picture” of what’s happening. I want to see how players are going for each hill as a unit, where they are defending and supporting from as a whole unit. Until you see the bigger picture a new player to the game will just seem overwhelmed by action, but underneath all that chaos and action is a tactical battle with players slowly making progress toward hill locations. I would love to see a view halo wars style or something similar! Just an idea, as we need as many suggestions as possible to get new players into the game! A multi dimensional mode where you can have an overhead view would work for me and be more enjoyable to throw into the mix more often.

I love how the matches are played to a first to 7 on each level and the domination is certainly obvious for some maps with some teams going 7-0 whereas we had a few classics going all the way at 7-6, incredible moments were happening throughout including an impressive comeback from 6-3 down to win 6-7.

The best part for me was meeting everyone that we have got to know over the years and share some photos together and have a laugh whilst watching some gears of war, what could be better!

I highly recommend anyone who has had their doubts about making a trip to come along and next time for sure I’ll be doing the full weekend and after parties and bringing along some more of you hopefully!

We are headed to Gears Pro Circuit – London and you should come too!

10 Tips to Success in Gears of War 4

This video was released during the Beta, but is still extremely relevant to the game now it has been released. It was one of our tutorials we made that has not really had the attention it deserves and there are some important lessons in there that will help you become a better player by making better decisions and ensuring that you are more aware of your surroundings and team mates.

Gone are the days where you can be successful as a lone wolf in this game, its now about supporting your team, helping them to unlock enemies positions by creating more angles on the enemies. Stopping rushing enemies on the opposition team and taking down those who try and pickup the power weapons.

Reducing the risks you take and taking risks in the right situations are some of the things that will make you a better Gears of War 4 player.

Although its tempting to listen to some people about Wall bouncing and its importance, its somewhat irrelevant as a good organised team will be able to nullify this threat.

When playing Gears of War 4 Beta
It’s important to think about your game and play style and how effective it is at getting the all important wins that will affect your overall rank.

See this post on our website at

1.) Stick with your team!

This has gotta be the most significant game for team work that we can remember. The maps are layed out in such a way that you can only see a small portion of the map at any one time. So controlling areas of the map are a top priority.

2.) Support your team

Not only sticking with your team, but supporting them! Are you adding value by increasing your team mates DPS against an enemy? Are you creating another angle that supports their battle and reduces the chance the enemy has of winning?

3.) Spot enemies

Your unit is much stronger together, and knowledge is power!
The game has extra focus on reactions, because of the map layout, which means that spotting enemies coming can give you a significant advantage especially if your team are working as a unit effectively.

4.) Cover the flank
Flanking occurs on small areas, frequently. There is mutliple routes available to multiple locations, and no “safe” areas that favour another particulary well.
As part of your unit, you need to cover your teams flank, or the position that they are not covering.

5.) Don’t go looking for kills, look for your team mates

If you find yourself dying a lot, it can be frustrating. The result of a gnasher battle can be as much down to a roll of a dice or a flip of a coin, such small movements of the player or poor shot timing can result in a gnasher battle loss.
Instead of getting frustrated, stop looking for kills and let the kills come to you and hold lb to find your team mates.

6.) Stay calm in close combat

It can be an instinctual reaction to panic up close and personal with other players.
It’s better to learn to control you shots, and time them well. Rather than slowly get better at panicking!

7.) Attack Smartly

Target weak enemies, take a gamble with these enemies
Get behind enemies by flanking
Support your team mates by flanking and catching players out of position

8.) Active Reload
Make good use of active reloads. Use them when you are preparing for battle, or prior to getting behind an enemy. Or simply to catch an enemy out of position

9.) Value your life!
Your life is very valuable in Gears, especially in TDM! Instead of trying to get kills, try and minimise your deaths! And reduce the risks you take!

10.) Persevere, watch pro players, read tips, find a team.
This game will frustrate you but keep going! Its very satisfying when you can pull off some great moves. Keep going! The ranking factors will keep you on a fairly level playing field! Tips from pro players will help too.
